Statement: | In my second year of secondary school, I began studying under Mr. Lee Yun Woon. He started me from foundations—texture stroke, rubbing, dot, and wash. Then he led me onto copying the works of masters and sketching from nature. He sent me to the park to study plants, into the city to draw buildings, teaching me that a truthful appreciation of the world begins with its ordinary forms.
I grew fond of seizing what lay before my eyes. Though I could not yet put things down into form, I captured their rough contour. Each week I would show my attempts to Mr. Lee, and a few kind words of encouragement would fill me with tremendous joy. It was Mr. Lee who guided me into the Fine Arts Department at the Chinese University. From him I learned to find myself within the seen—to reflect “life” is to reflect “heart.” By good fortune and good timing, I studied at CUHK with Masters Ding Yanyong, Chan Si-man, Tsang Hak-tuen, Tsang Yuk and Mayching Kao. With their capacious vision of world art and their generous artistic temperaments, they widened my sight and my spirit. I have long admired the ancients who inscribed words upon their paintings marking time and stories upon image. In 2013, learning that Mr. Lee would regularly appear at the Humanities Building, I seized the chance to seek instruction from him once more. Under his firm guidance, I began practicing inscriptions on my own works—and my heart was filled with tremendous joy. What good fortune these recent years, to reopen books once left unfinished, and what greater fortune still, to have met art in my life. The present display gathers my travels and reflections, wherever my steps have led, in the language of Chinese ink. I hope to bear witness to what I have learned, not failing the teachings of my mentors. I also look forward to sharing and exchanging with fellow students and friends, the continuing journey of art. |
