EndNote 21 is compatible with desktop libraries created in EndNote X9.3 and later versions. You can open and use those libraries in EndNote 21 seamlessly.

However, to use libraries created with EndNote X9.2 or earlier versions in EndNote 21, you will need to convert them to the EndNote X9.3 or later format first. See the steps below:

  • Select File, then Open Library
  • Choose the old EndNote library file you wish to convert
  • Click Open

This method allows you to create a new compatible library while leaving the original library unchanged. For more details about compatibility issue, please refer to this page.
