Once you have added the necessary references to your RefWorks, you can insert citations into your paper in a MS Word document.

Ensure RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM) is installed in Word for citing sources before you start writing.

Insert Citations

It is recommended to cite the references as you write your papers. Follow the steps below to insert citations from RefWorks into a Word document :

  1. Login RefWorks-RCM with your CUHK e-mail in a MS Word
  2. Select/search for reference(s) you wish to cite
  3. Position the mouse cursor where you want to insert the citation, and then click on Cite/Insert Citation
  4. The in-text citation is added
  5. To add a bibliography, click on the hamburger menu () on top left of RefWorks-RCM, select Bibliography: On
  6. RefWorks will now automatically create the bibliography in your Word document.

Note

You can only insert references that are already imported into RefWorks. Do ensure you have added them beforehand.

Change the Citation Styles

The citation style in use can be identified through RefWorks-RCM. Here are the steps to change a style:

  1. Click the existing citation style to modify it
  2. Press the pull-down menu for ‘Change Citation Style’, then search for the citation style you want
  3. Choose the citation style.
  4. Check the in-text citation and bibliography, then click Update to confirm the changes.

Note

You can mark a citation as a favourite by clicking on the star() icon next to the citation style.

Edit Citations

If the default format and information shown in the in-text citations do not meet your needs, such as wanting to include page numbers, you can edit the citations in RefWorks-RCM.

  1. Select the in-text citation you want to change, the 'Edit Citation' panel will appear in RefWorks-RCM
  2. Check the desired box(es) to edit the in-text citation, e.g. Display as Author(Year)
  3. Press Update Citation
