The WWW Virtual Library (VL) is the oldest catalogue of the Web. Unlike commercial catalogues, it is run by a loose confederation of volunteers, who compile pages of key links for particular areas in which they are expert; even though it isn't the biggest index of the Web, the VL pages are widely recognised as being amongst the highest-quality guides to particular sections of the Web.

Institute of Theoretical Computer Science and Communications (ITCSC) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong was established in July 2007 to promote and support innovative and cutting-edge research in theoretical computer and communication sciences.

The Shun Hing Institute of Advanced Engineering is a strategic initiative of The Chinese University of Hong Kong dedicated to excellence and innovation in the research and development of advanced engineering areas relevant to Hong Kong and the region. It is established through the generous funding support of the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund, a splendid example of crossover partnership of the private sector in state-of-the-art research at a tertiary institution.

Following a comprehensive review of higher education of Hong Kong, the University Grants Committee (UGC) advised the Government in a report published in October 1996 that Hong Kong would need world-class institutions with distinct areas of excellence in order to retain its leading economic position in the development of China and the Pacific Rim. The UGC recommended, and the Government agreed, that the UGC-funded institutions should build upon their existing strengths and develop them into Areas of Excellence (AoE).
