News & Updates

Temporary Closure of Learning Garden

As a library initiative to support the University-wide themes on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Learning Garden, a popular 24/7 space for students, has been conducting a refurbishment project to create the first MakerSpace for the CUHK community. The Learning Garden will be closed from May 12, 7 pm to September 1, 2019 for the Phase II refurbishment project.

The retrieval service for the audio-visual materials and A Class books, which are housed in the Learning Garden, will be provided as soon as possible during the renovation.

The following services and facilities will be affected during this period of time:

• Kindle E-book readers, chargers, laptop computers, please borrow and return them at the HelpDesk on the G/F.

• 3D Printing and Scanning Services: please send your 3D printing and scanning requests to us by email:

• Bubble Group Study Rooms, e-charger station and vending machines are not accessible.

For 24-hour study facilities, the Learning Commons at the Wu Ho Man Yuen (WMY) Building will remain open for all CUHK students and staff. Please contact us by phone 3943 9730 or by email for enquiries.

Maker Bubble situated in IT Zone of the Learning Garden is a Makerspace equipped with fabrication tools and a collaborate workspace to accommodate 8-10 people for makers to create, learn, explore and share new ideas.  The spaces are open to current CUHK students and staff.

Our strategy for having such a service in the Learning Garden is to inspire the students to explore new interests in design. We also advocate peer-to-peer 3D printing support to engage students of all academic disciplines.  Such a service, therefore, not only builds a creative ambience and culture for the students, but also encourages cross-discipline collaboration.

A Gateway to Makerspace

Maker Bubble is a fabrication and co-working space where various specialist manufacturing tools and equipment are made available for makers either alone or in groups to prepare prototypes.  The Library’s Maker Bubble is a welcoming space for students, who dare to think and create, and to bring their inventions into daily life.

With a sound foundation and our experience in 3D printing and scanning, the Library is planning to move forward to set up a Makerspace equipped both with fabrication equipment and a studio for video production in the near future.
